Knife care

At Handfab, our knives are made to be used, admired, and cherished for a lifetime. With just a little regular care, your knife will remain sharp, beautiful, and reliable for years to come.

Cleaning

  • Hand-wash your knife with warm water and mild soap immediately after use.
  • Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth—never leave your knife wet.

Avoid:

  • Putting your knife in the dishwasher.
  • Soaking your knife or leaving it in the sink.

Storage

Proper storage prevents damage and keeps your knife safe and sharp.

  • Magnetic wall strip (wood-lined preferred)
  • Knife block
  • Blade guard or sheath

Avoid loose storage in drawers, which can dull or damage the blade.

Sharpening & Honing

  • Hone regularly: Use a honing rod every few uses to maintain the edge.
  • Sharpen when needed: Use a whetstone or trusted professional sharpening service.

Handle Care

If your knife has a wooden handle:

  • Apply food-safe mineral oil or beeswax occasionally.
  • Avoid soaking or exposing to high heat.

Rust Prevention

High-carbon steel knives offer incredible performance, but require a little extra attention:

  • Dry thoroughly after use.
  • Store in a dry environment.
  • Apply a light coat of food-safe oil before long-term storage.

Patina

Surface patina is natural and protective. For any rust, gently clean with baking soda or fine steel wool.
